Choosing the right AED can be a daunting task. Here are some things to think about when choosing the right AED for you.

Environment

Choose an AED that can be used in a variety of environments, such as on wet or metal surfaces.

Voice prompts

Look for AEDs with clear, step-by-step voice instructions that track your movements and repeats the voice prompts so you won’t be left behind.

Self-testing

To ensure your AED is ready to go, make sure you choose one that does daily self-tests, including testing the electrode pads.

CPR

Find an AED that provides CPR guidance, including a metronome to help you administer CPR correctly.

Community

SCA can happen to anyone anywhere. Choose an AED that can be used on both adults and children.

Battery life

Choose an AED with at least a 5-year battery shelf life.

Warranty

Look for an AED with at least an 8-year warranty and superior manufacturer support.

Training

Choose an AED that can be turned into a trainer and avoid buying a second training device.

Alerts

Choose an AED that features visual and/or audible alerts for maintenance or part replacement.

An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a device that checks a person’s heart and delivers an electric shock if it has stopped beating normally. If a person suddenly collapses, they may be suffering from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). SCA is serious, it means that the person’s heart has stopped pumping blood and they need help fast.

How do I set up a HeartStart AED

Using a HeartStart AED is easy. Simply remove the AED from its red case and pull out the tab to start the automatic battery self-test. Press the flashing orange Shock button when instructed by the AED. When the AED passes the self-test, it turns off and the green Ready light starts blinking. Reinstall the AED in its carry case and it is ready to be used in an emergency.
